Algarve Swing Begins!

The Quinta da Ria / Casinos do Algarve Swing teed off on the Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima Courses on Sunday 25th May, with two Pro Am events.

The series of PGA Europro Tour professional tournaments will begin at Quinta de Cima on Tuesday 27th, so the professionals will spend the 26th attempting to ‘learn the examination paper’ which this beautiful course will set.

The Quinta da Ria Pro Am was held in celebration of the 1st anniversary of the official opening of this course, a date which coincides with the birthday of José Lisboa, the owner of the course. This event featured 22 teams, all the professionals being competitors in the upcoming professional events. The amateurs comprised club members and special guests.

Winners of the Team Event:
1st:  Michiel Bothma – 128 (Ian Cieter, Nuno Ferrer, Nel Verbeek)
2nd: John Mellor (countback) – 129 (Oliver Peable, Jorge Domingos, Manuela Paulino)
3rd: John Wells (countback) – 129 (Jan & Nel Muiden, David Stevens)
4th: Craig Lee (countback) – 129 (Pedro Silvestre, Randi Piro, Manuel Alpalhão)

Individual Low Scoring Professionals:
1st: John Wells – 65
=2nd: Michiel Bothma, Greg Hyde – 68
4th: Stephen McGavin, Liam Bond – 69The Quinta de Cima Pro Am comprised further professional event participants and amateurs representing event sponsors and special guests.

Winners of the Team Event:
1st: Kieran Staunton – 127 (Paulo Martins, António Mendes, Francisco Assis Brito)
2nd: Matt Morris (countback) – 130 (Francisco Teodósio, José Casimiro, Albino Ramos)
3rd: Paul Dorelli(countback) – 130 (Rui Calado, Anibal Martins, Rui Saleiro)
4th: Peter Mitchell (countback) – 133 (Gago Leiria, Joel Pais, José Guerreiro)

Individual Low Scoring Professionals:
1st: Simon Griffiths – 68
2nd: Kieran Staunton – 69
3rd: Chris Gill – 70
=4th: Peter Mitchell, Tom Whitehouse, Graham Rankin, Phil Worthington, Matt Morris – 71

The professionals were unanimous in their praise of both courses. Indeed, experienced Scottish tournament professional Graham Rankin said, “We should feel honoured to play in this location, this is a great course”.

Quinta da Boavista Head Greenkeeper, Joaquim Costa, said, “The course is beautiful and in spectacular condition. I didn’t play well but it was a pleasure”.

Now that the wind has relented we can expect a feast of good golf, not only for the spectators, who are welcome to view the event and to enjoy the Tented Village. But also for the millions of television viewers around the world, who will be able to see the quality of courses and weather which the Algarve offers.
