BEN WELCH holds the first round lead at the second successive PGA EuroPro Tour tournament, having shot a four-under-par 69 on the opening day of The Swallow Challenge.
Welch, who equalled the course record on the opening day at Heydon Grange last week, was again in top form during his first round at Farleigh Court.
He carded five birdies during his round, with the only blemish coming with a bogey at the 16th during an impressive assault on Europe’s longest course.
Welch is a stroke clear of Peter Williamson, Ciaran McMonagle and early leader Phil Worthington going into Thursday’s second round.
Andrew Willey, Daniel Wardrop and Eamonn Brady shot two-under-par rounds of 71, with South African Matthew Kent and Mark Smith a shot further back.
Mark Fairhall and Graham Clark complete the scorers at par or better for the opening day, with Sandeep Grewal landing a hole-in-one at the fifth as the highlight of his round.
