Gregory Bowden leads the way in the Bovey Castle Championship after a tough opening day in Devon.
The Irishman (Hermitage GC) started off with a bogey on the first but instantly responded with birdies on the second, sixth and seventh and was steady down the back nine with a birdie on 13 taking his score to 67.
Play in the afternoon was tough due to some tough weather conditions and slowed play up, with the wind vicious at time and making the tight par three second a particularly gruelling opener to the round. Graham Brown (Golf Fit Ltd/Dalmahoy) seemed to get on top of the elements and was five under after 15 but dropped shots on the last three holes to card 68. The last group of players were due out at 3.30pm but were delayed until 4.15pm.
Englishmen Paul Maddy (Gog Magog) and Chris Gill (Exeter) also carded 68, Maddy picking up five birdies, Gill four while group of five players are a shot behind in the clubhouse at one under. There will be another early start in Devon tomorrow, with the first group due out at 6.30am.
