The HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour continues this week as Frilford Heath Golf Club in Abingdon plays host to The Buildbase Open.
Now into its fourth year the event is a mainstay of the EuroPro schedule with previous winners including George Woolgar (2012) and James Robinson (2014), who both went on to graduate to the Challenge Tour at the end of the season which saw them lift the title at Frilford Heath.
Back on the Red Course after two years on the Blue, this year’s tournament sees Martin Sell return to the scene of his Qualifying School triumph last month.
The Swindon-based golfer, who plays out of Wrag Barn Golf Club, shot 14 under par over three rounds in qualifying for the tour at Frilford Heath and the former Challenge Tour player has stated his intention to return to Europe’s second tier by virtue of a place in this year’s EuroPro Order of Merit top five.
The 2015 HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour season began at Celtic Manor last week, where Surrey’s Gary King took home the title and £10,000 winner’s prize. He is in the field for the Buildbase Open, a tournament he is familiar with.
In 2013 he carded a second-round 65 on the Blue Course to enter the final round 11 under par, one behind the leader, only to shoot a three-over-par 75 for his final round.
King was joined in the top three at Celtic Manor by 2012 Amateur Champion Alan Dunbar from Ireland, and Devon’s Billy Hemstock, who has three EuroPro Tour titles to his name. Both will tee it up again this week, alongside Warren Bennett, the former European Tour winner who won EuroPro Q School at Frilford Heath in 2013.
Spectator entry to the Buildbase Open is free throughout the tournament, which commences on Wednesday, May 20. A cut to the leading 50 players and ties will be made after the second round on Thursday, after which a final 18 holes will be played on Friday, May 22.
The tournament will be filmed for a two-hour highlights show to be aired on Sky Sports on Tuesday, June 2.
