Co-leader Roope 4/1 favourite for Tour Champs

October 21st, 2008

Colin Roope is the new 4/1 favourite to win the Les Bordes Tour Championship in France, heading a trio of leaders at level par ahead of Wednesday’s final round.

Roope followed his opening round 71 with a one over 73 in Tuesday’s second round, missing two three-foot putts on the final two holes. Jack Doherty and Robert Steele join Roope as leaders and are both 9/2 to scoop the £20,000 prize.

“I’d have taken the scores before the start but I missed a couple of three footers on the last couple of holes,” said Roope.

The three-footer at 17 was for par and the one he missed at the last was for a birdie, and Roope said that his putter was the key to his chances of winning the tournament.

“I’m happy with the way I’m playing but I’m not putting well,” said Roope. “If I get on the putting green now I’ll be up there tomorrow. It’s a course that suits my game and I think if you went under par and didn’t win you’d be disappointed.”

Doherty equalled the course record with a 68 after his first round 76 to go into the final round full of confidence, knowing that with £18,000 separating him from fifth place in the Order of Merit – he needs to go for it in the final round. “I didn’t really change anything today – other than not carding three bogeys down the back nine like I did in my first round!” said Doherty. “I’m looking forward to tomorrow though, I need to win as second is no good for me so I know what I have to do.”

Paul Hendriksen and Graham Gordon are two shots behind the leading trio at two over (146), with Skybet making Hendriksen 7/1 and Gordon 9/1 for the title. Nicky Harris, Jamie Moul, Daniel Brooks and Alan Murray are one shot further back at three over (147) with Skybet pairing Moul and Murray at 10/1, Harris at 16s and Brooks at 20/1.
