Maddy (Gog Magog) was one under par after 18 holes of the PGA EuroPro Tour event but his second round 62 fired him to the top of the leaderboard, with Charlie Cossins (68, 67) second on nine under par.

A birdie at the par-four first was an ideal start for Maddy and he gained a second shot with a three at the third. He completed holes four, five and six to par before shooting three consecutive birdies from the seventh to move five under the card.

Another triple of birdies was made at 13, 14 and 15 to take the Englishman to nine under par overall, and an eagle at the 18th saw him complete his record round and take the lead from Cossins (Bath Golf Club), who had earlier signed for a 67, one shot better than his opening round.

Cossins had shared the 18-hole lead with Scott Fallon (68, 70) and was in the first group off the 10th tee on Thursday morning. He began well with five pars before making a birdie three at the 15th. Coming in he made four at the par-five first and another par-breaker at six began a run of three straight birdies and he concluded with a par at nine.

Fallon (Lightning Packaging Supplies Ltd) sits third with a 36-hole score six below par, despite opening with bogeys at 10 and 13. One shot was pulled back at 15 and he was level par for the day when he turned home thanks to a four at the 18th. Birdies at two and seven allowed him to sign for a 70 but the London golfer has five shots to make up on Maddy.

Four players are tied for fourth on five under par, including Dale Whitnell (Five Lakes) who shot a 66 to move up the leaderboard after an opening round of 73.

Steve Capper (Caldy Golf Club, 69, 70), Shaun McAllister (Craigielaw Golf Club, 70, 69) and James Watts (The Sports Academy, 70, 69) share fourth place with Whitnell.

A cut to the top 50 players plus ties has now been made. All golfers with a 36-hole score of two over par or better will play the final 18 holes on Friday. The leading group is due out at 11:07am. Spectator entry is free throughout the event and live scoring will be available at
