Dale Marmion has won the Peak Performance Player of the Month for August – rich reward after two fantastic performances in Northampton and Croydon.
The 23 year-old won his first event on this year’s Tour in Bristol back in July and became the first player on the Tour to win two events in 2008 when he powered through the field at Whittlebury Park in Northamptonshire with a stunning final round of 62. His Bristol win came at The Players Club where he led from the front after the first two rounds but just edged over the line in the end – at Whittlebury Park, he had no such problems.
Dale shot 69 and 70 (par 71) in the first two rounds to find himself tied in tenth spot at three under, three strokes behind the leader. Four birdies on the front nine took him to seven under, but it was an eagle at the tenth where he holed a seven iron over the water from 170 yards that put him on the road to a three shot victory with a score of 201 – 12 under.
“I knew I was miles behind and had to do something special, but I think it might’ve helped not being in front like I was at The Players Club,” said Marmion. “When you’re behind you can relax and I got some good momentum going. Shooting 62 was great – and the eagle at 10, well, that was nice!”
He warmed up for his victory at Whittlebury Park with a second place finish at Selsdon Park in Croydon – where in a reverse of his situation in Bristol, Lloyd Kennedy led from the front and Dale was in the chasing pack.
“Lloyd found himself in the same situation as me at Selsdon – well in front of the rest of us,” said the 23 year-old. “I wasn’t expecting to win so all I could do was push him to make mistakes and get as high up as possible. There were three of us fighting for second spot but with Lloyd so far in front it felt pretty good to get a share of it.”
Since his sparkling month in August, Dale admitted he stuttered in September, finishing tied in 24th at East Sussex National and missed the cut at the Ladbrokescasino.com Masters at the La Cala Golf Resort in Spain – with his only other missed cut coming in the first event at Wensum Valley in April.
The Manchester man will put that disappointment behind him though as he prepares to tackle the Les Bordes Tour Championships in France where he will be gunning to cap a fine season with a third win.
“Spain was weird as I didn’t feel that I played badly but obviously I shot a big score – perhaps it’s good to get it out of the way before the Tour Championships,” said Marmion.
“Les Bordes is definitely a players course and it sounds unbelievably hard. But there’s £20,000 to play for I think that there’s only a few players who can win it so I’m really looking forward to the challenge.
“I’ve already guaranteed my Challenge Tour card so my focus is getting number one spot and winning the order of merit and the Tour Championship.”
Dale wins a £1,000 voucher to spend on Peak Performance’s golf range at Harrods and a specially embroidered jacket. He will join the four other winners of the Peak Performance Players of the Month in an 18-hole play-off with a prize purse of £10,000, taking place at The Players Club, Bristol on October 16.
