Dykes and McCarthy well-placed on day one in Crewe

August 10th, 2010

WELSHMAN Tim Dykes is the early clubhouse leader in the latest event in the PGA EuroPro Tour season.

The ABC Solutions UK Championship is taking place at De Vere Wychwood Park in Crewe and features some of the best young British golfers.

Dykes, 30, has played on the European Tour and for the last three years been a regular on the Challenge Tour.

But he made a fine start in the tenth EuroPro Tour competition of 2010 after shooting an opening round score of 68, four under par.

He would have shot a better score but was left rueing dropped shots at both the 11th and 15th.

This is the fourth PGA EuroPro Tour event Dykes has played in this year and he has made the cut at the previous three, although his best finish was only tied 30th at Burhill in Surrey.

Nick McCarthy triumphed last week at Formby Hall in Merseyside and is well-placed for back-to-back victories following birdies at the fifth, seventh, ninth and tenth holes.

Elsewhere, an eagle on the par-five first helped Richard Edginton (Effingham Golf Club) to an opening day score of three-under.

Steve Uzzell (Hornseas Golf Club) was the joint leader after day one at the last event and he has made a bright start here as he is also on three-under.

The winner of this three-day tournament, which concludes on Thursday, will collect £10,000 and competition will be fierce as the golfers step up their bids for places on the Challenge Tour.

To do that, players will need to be in the top six of the PGA EuroPro Tour Order of Merit after the Tour Championships in October.

Scotsman Craig Lee is currently second in the money list and he made a bright start with a score of two-under.

James Hepworth and Stuart Archibald, sixth and eighth respectively on the Order of Merit, both need strong days on Wednesday if they are to make the cut after shooting one-over on Tuesday.
