Early Insight: The Northern Ireland Masters in support of Global Golf4 Cancer

May 24th, 2022

The PGA EuroPro Tour’s fantastic relationship with Clandeboye Golf Club will be extended by yet another year, as the tour will visit again from August 24-26 for the Northern Ireland Masters in support of Global Golf4 Cancer.

Last year an approximated crowd of 5,000 had attended the final day, and we are excited to see a similar volume of spectatorship this season.

Venue Information

When it comes to golfing in Northern Ireland, you will struggle to find a more polished, respected and loved golf club than Clandeboye.

There are numerous courses located on the premises, but the EuroPro Tour players will be tackling the tricky Dufferin routing.

Baron von Limburger was the chief designer for the Dufferin, although he did receive assistance from Peter Aliss and Dave Thomas – who were responsible for The Belfry’s Brabazon course.

The layout measures 6,742 yards and this difficult loop holds the potential of exposing a golfer’s shortcomings rapidly.

With gorse, bracken and strategically placed trees lining every hole, even minor mistakes are susceptible to disastrous outcomes.

A real standout of Clandeboye are the surreal, panoramic views that completely encapsulate the beautiful golf course.

Considering its length is under 7,000 yards, accuracy will be the order of the day, although a lack of distance may dampen par-5 scoring rates.

Clandeboye can best be summarised as highly intimidating; blind drives, harrowing carries and multi-tier greens combine to create the ultimate golfing challenge.

Owen Trainor, former Clandeboye Golf Club Captain, is thrilled at the opportunity of hosting the EuroPro Tour again.

“Northern Ireland has a bright future with our emerging talent inspired by our own Jonny Caldwell – European Tour Winner in 2021 hitting the headlines – and we are immensely proud of him.

“So, we have a lot to look forward to as we prepare for the EuroPro Tour event at Clandeboye this August.”

Daniel Godding, CEO of the PGA EuroPro Tour, knew that he had to absolutely return to Clandeboye Golf Club.

“Clandeboye is a very special place. I think there were approximately 5,000 spectators during last year, and that’s something that all the players enjoyed.

“You know you are guaranteed an excellent atmosphere in Northern Ireland – which is why the tour will be heading to the country twice this season.”

Previous Visit

Last year’s event was an absolute blockbuster, as the locals came out in the thousands to support the EuroPro Tour players.

Irishman Simon Thornton secured his second EuroPro Tour victory – 13 years after his first triumph – to win the Northern Ireland Masters.

The 45-year-old was two strokes clear of David Langley (-12) and the leading duo endured phenomenal final rounds, with Thornton carding -4 and Langley -6 for the day.

Joe Brooks was the overnight leader but he suffered a stuttering afternoon, failing to capitalise on his advantage and posting a disappointing +3 during his final round, which left him in fourth.

Mitch Waite, who graduated from the tour last season, was two back from Brooks heading into the final round and looking to bolster his Order of Merit lead.

The Bristolian failed to exhibit the same flawless rhythm however, as he finished even-par and third for the tournament.

James Allan, Callum Farr and Curtis Knipes were all placed within the top 10 and all finished their campaigns strongly.

Clandeboye Golf Club is a pillar of the local community, which is something that the tour understood once spectators flocked in their thousands.

Each and every visit to this special golfing hub has resulted in major success and we envision any future trips to replicate the same standard of excitement and quality.

The PGA EuroPro Tour is ecstatic to return to Clandeboye Golf Club again this season and we are eager to see who will be crowned The Northern Ireland Masters champion.
