Early Insight: The PDC Golf Championship

Early Insight: The PDC Golf Championship

May 13th, 2022

The final PGA EuroPro Tour tournament of June will take place at Abridge Golf & Country Club, where the players will be looking to capture the PDC Golf Championship title from June 29 – July 1.

Although this is the first time Abridge have hosted a EuroPro Tour event, they have previously operated as a Regional Qualifying venue for The Open Championship.

Venue Information

When it comes to golfing facilities in the county of Essex, seldom are there any more impressive than the beautiful Abridge Golf & Country Club.

The club’s history dates back to the 1960s, where Henry Cotton was issued his first opportunity at designing a golf course.

The Englishman wanted both loops of nine holes to start and finish at the clubhouse, which has become more common with reputable venues in contemporary times.

Cotton’s original vision has been slightly altered since its creation, although any changes further enhanced the quality on offer.

Measuring 6,704 yards and boasting a par of 72, severe elevation changes mean that you can probably add a few more hundred yards to the overall distance of the layout.

240 acres of unadulterated Essex countryside make up the golf course, and this wonderful parkland routing will certainly be a highlight for the players this year.

Abridge has built a strong reputation through their magnificent greens and expertly maintained fairways – which is further enhanced through a collection of memorable holes.

The par-3 2nd will be of particular interest to players, as a pond located to the right of the green will demand pinpoint accuracy.

Holes 10, 11 and 12 combine to create the Abridge ‘Amen Corner’. The stretch of holes are all par-4s and measure well beyond the 400-yard marking, which will not only require a long drive but also an excellent approach.

Approximately, there are over 90 golf clubs in the county of Essex and Abridge certainly belongs at the top of the group.

Justin Webb, General Manager of Abridge Golf & Country Club, cannot wait to welcome the EuroPro Tour to the venue.

“EuroPro Tour events are wonderful for the sport and a pleasure to watch. I am very excited to be hosting a EuroPro Tour event at Abridge and seeing the talented field of golf professionals play the challenging and beautiful golf course.

“Having worked with the EuroPro Tour team before, I am very much looking forward to working with the team again in June for The PDC Championship.”

Dan Godding, CEO of the PGA EuroPro Tour, is elated about the inclusion of Abridge Golf & Country Club into the seasonal rotation.

“Abridge is a club that we have targeted previously and I am so glad we can finally bring them on board.

“The boys might not get the opportunity to play Augusta National Golf Club, but at least they can face an ‘Amen Corner’ of their own!”

Previous Visit

This year will mark the first time that the PGA EuroPro Tour will visit Abridge Golf & Country Club, but that doesn’t mean the venue hasn’t previously hosted important competition.

After creatively improving on Cotton’s original design, Abridge were selected for Regional Qualifying for The Open Championship from the years of 2009 to 2013.

This season’s hosting of the EuroPro Tour will be the first instalment of competitive golf returning to the club, as they have also been chosen to host the UK Ladies Nationals in 2024.

Sponsor Information

The Professional Darts Corporation will be sponsoring the event at Abridge and the organisation needs no introduction.

Homing remarkable talents such as Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright and Gary Anderson, it is the premium darts tour throughout the world.

If you’re interested in watching the world’s best players battle it out, you can peruse dates and purchase tickets here.
