Former Tour player Hoey wins Portugal Open

April 6th, 2009

Former PGA EuroPro Tour player Michael Hoey clinched his maiden European Tour triumph in a dramatic play-off at the Estoril Open de Portugal in Cascais. The Irishman (pictured) was five shots off the lead at the start of Sunday’s final round but gobbled up the ground with a 66 to finish level with Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano at seven under. Hoey got the better of the Spainard on the third play-off hole to add a first European Tour title to his three Challenge Tour wins, and gains a two year exemption on the tour as a result of his win.The 30 year-old played nine events 2002 to 2004, with a third place finish at Wychwood Park in 2003 and fourth at Suffolk Golf and Country Club the following year his best performances.Hoey’s victory should inspire those players ready to tackle Frilford Heath in the final stage of qualifying this week, with the first round kicking off early Tuesday morning. The EuroPro Tour site will have updates at the close of play plus full scores from Oxfordshire.Date Posted: 06/04/09
