Treated to yet more sunshine, players took advantage of an excellent course in pristine condition, with many good scores returned as a result.
Antonio Sobrinho played an exceptional second round to record a 65 and become leader in the clubhouse with a score of 135. The young Portuguese player started the day on two under and notched up seven birdies to finish nine under for the tournament. Only the overnight leader, David Close, was able to beat this score when he returned a score of 69 to finish twelve under for the tournament and three shots clear at the top.
Vilamoura amateur Ricardo Santos did not fare so well, and recorded a four over par 76. However, combined with his previous four under par 68, Santos had done enough to make the cut and will play a third and final round.
In joint third position were John Mellor (Lindrick), Graham Rankin (Drumpellier), Gordon Sherry (Cardross) and Marc Warren all with eight under par scores of 136. Former European Tour player Mellor played a great round of 65 after sinking five birdies and an eagle. Marc Warren, from Scotland, shot an impressive 66 and fellow Scotsmen Graham Rankin and Gordon Sherry both played solidly to each record a second consecutive round of 68.
The credit for the best round of the day was shared by Craig Lee and Ben Banks, who both shot incredible eight under par rounds of 64 in the heat. Lee played very solidly, with just one bogey amongst his nine birdies. Banks teed off from the 10th, and recorded four birdies and a bogey on his first nine holes before a great run at the turn resulted in eagle, birdie, birdie, par. A further two birdies and a bogey left him eight under for the day and in joint seventh place with a seven under score of 137 for the tournament. Also in seventh place was Welshman Kyron Sullivan who shot 70, and South African Michiel Bothma, who shot 67 to lift him up the scoreboard.
The other big news of the day was that Mark Allen (Worksop), sank a hole-in-one on the 140 metre long second hole, and so became the first player of the season to gain a place in the Peugeot Hole-In-One Challenge! This enters Mark into a nearest the pin shoot out where the winner will drive away in a brand new Peugeot 206SW!
The cut was made with level par scores of 144 and better going on to play the final round.
