Daniel Gaunt and Oliver Turnill lead The Pandora 2009 Open at Burhill Golf Club in Surrey, leading by one shot at five under par ahead of Saturday’s final round.
Gaunt (Burhill GC, pictured) held the lead at four under with Matthew Mills (Wentworth) after the opening day and carded a one under round of 71 to remain top of the pile. Mills dropped back to three under after a frustrating day with an eagle and two birdies spoiled by five bogeys for a round of 73.
Joining Gaunt in the lead is Turnill (Bognor Regis GC), who started the day at level par but he quickly moved on with birdies at the first and fourth holes. Progress to the back nine was serene before he plundered four birdies in six holes to move to six under before dropping a shot at 17.
Daniel Wardrop (Didsbury GC) matched Turnill’s 67 to move to four under, starting on the back nine with a birdie and an eagle and following that with two more birdies to sit five under at the turn – trading three more birdies with three bogeys on the front nine to end one stroke behind the leaders. The round of the day belonged to Daniel Brooks (Mill Hill) who followed an opening round of 75 with five birdies and an eagle in a fantastic 65 that sees him join Wardrop at four under. James Busby (The Shropshire) completes a trio one shot behind the leaders with his second 70 of the tournament, although a bogey-bogey finish could prove costly.
Mills is one of seven players at three under par who will feel the title is within their reach on Saturday – Phil Worthington (Donnington Grove), Paul Maddy (Gog Magog), Matthew Evans, Graeme Clark (Doncaster), Michael Collins (Mallow Golf Range) and Jamie Elson (Forum Financial Associates) make up the group.
