Daniel Gaunt followed his strong showing at The Open Championship with a share of the lead of The Pandora 2009 Open at Burhill Golf Club in Surrey.
Playing on his home course, the Australian (pictured) – who made the cut at Turnberry – kicked off with a bogey on the first but soon got into his stride with birdies at the second and third. He traded birdies at the eighth and eleventh with bogeys at the seventh and thirteenth before a strong finish with a trio of birdies from 15 seeing him home in 68.
Joining Gaunt at the top of the Leaderboard is Matthew Mills (Wentworth), who started on the back nine with three birdies to go out three under. A fourth birdie at the first was followed by his only bogey of the day at the third – with another shot gained at the fifth to see the 25 year-old match Gaunt’s effort.
Jamie Elson (Forum Financial Associates) is another player who benefitted from a strong finish, one under through 15 with an eagle at the eleventh and finished with birdies at the 16th and the last to stand alone one stroke off the lead with a three under round of 69.
Graeme Clark (Doncaster) topped the 2007 Order of Merit has two top ten finishes under his belt this year and is nicely placed two shots off the lead with four birdies in his round of 70. James Gill, Paul Dwyer (Clitheroe) and James Busby (The Shropshire) join Clark at two under, with Dwyer recovering from a bogey at the first with three birdies, Gill recording five birdies in the day and Busby notching an eagle three at the fifth during his 70. Zack Saltman (Aegon) also carded a 70 late in the day and along with recent winner Paul Maddy (Gog Magog), Phil Worthington (Donnington Grove) and Matthew Evans completes the eight men two shots off the lead after the first round.
