Gordon takes Stoke by Nayland lead in a flash

June 26th, 2008

Graham Gordon leads the Stoke by Nayland Championship after the second round in Suffolk.

Gordon (SWM Golf Management) is one shot clear of Matthew Ford at five under after another impressive round. In Wednesday’s opening round he did the damage on the front nine, so it was only right that he turned on the style down the back in the second round. Level after the first nine, he picked up three birdies on the home stretch to post 69 and improve on his opening round of 70.

Ford (Marriott Tudor Park) started on the back nine and picked up three birdies in his first seven holes, but consecutive bogeys at 17 and 18 dropped him back to one under at the turn. He found the front nine to his liking though, picking up shots at the second, third and sixth but dropped a shot at the seventh to post 69 after his opening round 71.

A shot back at three under are Jamie and Nicky Harris. Nicky (Whitefield Golf Club) blitzed the front nine with four birdies and picked up another on the tenth. He double bogeyed 11 and dropped shots at 14 and 17 but added birdies at 12 and 13 for a 69 to follow his 72 in the opening round. Jamie (Nevill) looked like posting consecutive 70s until he dropped a shot at the ninth – his last hole – to post 71.

Paul Curry enjoyed a fine day in his home county and will be a real danger in the final round, among a group of four players at one under. The European Tour winner posted six bogeys in his opening round but found the calm conditions to his liking on the second day and made up some serious ground.

Curry started his round on the back nine and dropped a shot at 13 to move to four over for the tournament. But that was the only blemish on his round and he went on to make five birdies to post 68. Sean Doherty, Chris Hanson and Ryan Thomas are also one under, with five players on level par after the two rounds and another local man, Chelmsford’s Lloyd Kennedy, at one over with Philip Beever.

The final round begins early Friday morning, with the projected cut six over. Live scoring is available by clicking on Score Updates on the homepage.
