PHIL WORTHINGTON has taken an early lead at The Swallow Challenge, opening his account at the PGA EuroPro Tour event with a three-under-par 73 on Wednesday.
Worthington, who was tied for second at last week’s Sky Sports International following three rounds of 67, continued his good form during the opening day at Farleigh Court.
He shot five birdies during his round, including one at the last to push him out to -3 after earlier hitting a double bogey at the 11th hole.
He sits two shots clear of South African Matthew Kent and Erewash Valley’s Mark Smith, who shot 72.
Kent hit an eagle at the last to push his round under par, while Smith hit three birdies during his first round.
Damian Mooney and Steven Rettie were their closest challengers from the early starters, having shot 74 to sit at +1 going into day two.
Sandeep Grewal earned himself a place at the end-of-season Peugeot Hole In One Challenge after seeing his tee shot at the par three fifth nestle in the cup.
A further update will be available at the close of play on Wednesday.
