Grewal romps to Q School glory

Grewal romps to Q School glory

April 30th, 2009

Sandeep Grewal won the final stage of Q School on the PGA EuroPro Tour at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire with a final round of 67 to win by three strokes at four under.

Grewal (Heswall) was level going into Thursday’s final round but quickly made inroads into the top of the leaderboard with a birdie at the second and an eagle at the fifth. Another birdie at the eighth catapulted him to four under before the turn, and he stormed to five under with a birdie at 13 before dropping a shot at 17 to end with a 67 to add to a two over opening 73 on the red course before a two under (69) in his second round on the blue course – his 67 final round the best round of his four under tally of 209.

It represents a real fillip before the 2009 Tour for Grewal – pocketing £2,400 for the win – who only managed to make one cut in eight events last season – with the Heswall man an ever-present on the Tour since 2002. Grewal finished ahead of eight players at one under including overnight leaders Paul Dwyer (Clitheroe) and Mark Wilkinson (West Mallin) who dropped a stroke from one under with one over rounds of 72. Spaniard Ismael Castillo fired the round of the day of 66 to join the group at one under – profiting from couples of birdies at three and four, eight and nine and 11 and 12, before a bogey at 14 dropped him to five under for the day.

Martin Sell and Steve Surry (Cumberwell Park) posted 68s, Scottish pair Duncan Stewart (Grantown on Spey) and Chris Kelly (Cawder GC) notched 69s and Stuart Archibald (Blackmoor GC) went round in 71 to complete their one over 212, scooping £1,260 each.

Welshman Craig Smith was four over par with five holes left before plundering four birdies in those remaining holes to finish with three other players at level par (213) – Stephen Parry (Bolton) and Peter O’Keeffe also finishing level.

In total, 124 golfers took part in the final round to determine their category for the 2009 PGA EuroPro Tour, with the first event taking place Collingtree Park in Northampton from May 6. For the full score cards from Frilford Heath, click on the Score Updates link on the homepage.
