Chris Hanson’s good form continued in the opening round of the Stoke by Nayland Championship, shooting 69 to lead overnight.
Hanson (Crosland Heath/GO2SPORT.com, pictured) led after two rounds in Bovey Castle last week and put in another fine performance in windy conditions in Suffolk. He parred the first eight holes before posting his first birdie on the ninth, and although he wiped that out with a bogey at ten, further birdies at 12, 14 and 16 sees him one shot clear at three under.
Graham Gordon (SWM Golf Management) started his round on the back nine with a couple of bogeys, completing his first nine holes one over par, but birdies at one and two and another on the seventh saw him post 70 for his opening round.
Jamie Harris (Nevill) joins Gordon at two under, also birdying the opening two holes with a birdie at the seventh to take him to three under. Three straight bogeys from the eighth took him back to level but he managed four birdies from 13 onwards, with a double bogey on the 15th spoiling a fine finish. Level after starting on the back nine, Ricky Lee (Tyneside GC) is also a stroke behind Hanson after two birdies on the front nine.
A bogey at 18 prevented Steven Capper (Caldy GC) from joining the group at two under, while Joe Ferguson (Worcester G&CC) birdied the seventh and eighth – his back nine – to post 71 along with Capper. Matthew Ford (Marriott Tudor Park) is also one under, a fine recovery after bogeys at the first and third, picking up three shots down the front nine with pars down the home straight.
Scotsman Steven Mackie (Dunnikier GC) also shot 71, trading a couple of birdies and bogeys on the front nine – his back nine – after posting a birdie at 14 to be one under at the turn.
