Here's To You, Mr Robinson!

SIMON ROBINSON has won his first title on the PGA EuroPro Tour, after triumphing by two shots at The Swallow Suffolk Open.

The 24-year-old led by one stroke from Darren Prosser going into the final day at the Bury St Edmunds course, and managed to edge out the Stourbridge golfer to take the £10,000 first prize.

Six birdies in his opening 13 holes saw Prosser move ahead by two shots when he went to -13, after Robinson had bogeyed the second hole and only produced four birdies of his own.

But Robinson pulled level with birdies at the 14th and 15th holes before Prosser crucially shot a double bogey six at the next hole.

That left Robinson – representing Golfing Futures/Wynyard – to hold par for the final two holes to seal victory.

“It’s definitely the biggest win of my career,” said Robinson, who lives in Hartlepool.

“I’ve finished 11th twice on the tour this year, but knew I had a big chance by going into the final round ahead.

“I knew there would be pressure on me and that I’d have to handle that, but I’m pleased to have given myself the opportunity to have that pressure.

“That’s a good experience and valuable if I am to progress onto the European Tour, which is where I want to be.”

He added: “Darren played well. I’ve played with him twice before and he has shot 68, which he did again today, but I knew that if I matched that I’d win.

“I didn’t start too well, I had a bad lie on the first and only made par and then three-putted on the second hole, but I managed to get par at the third and then three birdies so I knew I’d come out of my bad patch.

“Even when Darren came back at me I knew he would have a bad hole somewhere.

“I thought it may have passed me by when I missed a birdie putt at the tenth and we both made par, but when he double-bogeyed the 16th I knew that was my chance.”

Final rounds of 68 from Bobby Young and David James saw them tie for third alongside Sean Whiffin at -7, with five players a shot further back.

They included Matthew Woods, who shot the best round of the final day with a 66, and a further five were tied on -4.

Robinson will be among the field when the PGA EuroPro Tour continues at Morley Hayes Golf Club in Derbyshire next week.

He added: “It will be another challenge for me – I’ll go home to regroup and recharge the batteries and hopefully I can perform well again.”
