FINE WEATHER and low scoring was the order of the day as The ISM Classic teed off at The Shropshire Golf Centre.
After an early bout of light rain, the sun came out and many of the field took full advantage with some high-quality play.
Leading the way were James Holmes (Mornflake Oats) and New Zealander Richard Squire who both carded seven-under-par scores of 65.
Holmes’ round consisted of five birdies and an eagle and after one-putting the first five holes he had the confidence to complete a clean round which was topped off with an eagle on the last.
Squire fired in seven birdies in an error-free round to take a share of the lead in the £40,000 tournament, which offers £10,000 to the winner.
Two players are a single shot behind in Andrew Willey (Nottingham City/Tiny Dog Records) and Shaun Norris (Silver Lakes Pretoria).
Willey struck seven birdies and a bogey whilst Norris hit more birdies than any other player – eight – but had his hopes of the lead blighted by a double bogey.
Cardiff’s Adam Constable in a further shot behind on 67 (five-under-par) whilst four players are a further shot adrift in what promises to be a close contest right up until Friday’s finish.
