THE 888.com European Trophy is likely to go right down to the wire as no fewer than eight players enter the final day’s play within a two-shot margin at the top of the leaderboard.
Heading the way at Bidford Grange are Michael Welch (Hawkstone Park) and James Holmes (Mornflake Oats/Whitby Morrison) who both fared well at last week’s European Tour School and have carried their form in to this event, sharing the lead on two-under-par 142.
Testing weather conditions have made low scoring tricky throughout, but Welch managed to gain a shot on day two thanks to four birdies and only three bogeys.
Holmes also picked up a shot with two birdies and a single bogey but overnight joint leader Jack Doherty (Vale of Glamorgan) will be relieved to stay in contention after shooting a one-over-par round for the day, helped by a birdie at the last.
He, along with Daniel Wardop (Didsbury) who picked up two shots on the day, is one behind the leaders on 143.
Matthew Tootey (North Wales GC), overnight leader Colm Moriarty (Glasson Hotel & CC), Ciaran McMonagle (Dunfanagy GC) and Ian Spencer (Heswall) are a further shot behind on 144.
58 players made the cut, which was set at six-over-par.
