King Reigns At The Players Club

King Reigns At The Players Club

June 25th, 2008

Matthew King (Toft Hotel) won the Bristol & London Open at The Players Club by an incredible six shot margin. King had started the final day in second place, but an excellent final round performance led to him recording a six under par 66 and finish with a nine under par aggregate.

King launched his attack from the very start of the final round, with birdies at the second, third and fifth. He then eagled the sixth to take him to five under after six holes, and looked certain to challenge for the title.

Strong winds made a challenging course even tougher, with very few players managing to remain under par on the final day as a result. This made King’s display even more remarkable, and as he deservedly collected the £10,000 first prize he commented, “I can’t tell you how delighted I am with my performance today. The conditions were tough and that’s the best round I’ve ever played under such circumstances”.

He added, “I was in a bubble of concentration and nothing seemed to faze me. I had a couple of chances to win earlier in the season and I’ve learned from those experiences. It was one of my goals for the season to win a tournament so I’m delighted that I actually have!”.

Sean Whiffin (Enfield) put in the second best performance of the day with a five under par 67 in the final round. This included five birdies and two bogeys, and lifted Whiffin into second place with a three under par total of 213.

Third place was shared by Liam Bond (Marriott St Pierre) and Scotland’s Graham Rankin (Drumpellier), who retains his position at the top of the Order of Merit.

It was a difficult day for overnight leader, David Orr (East Renfrewshire). Although he won the event at this venue last year, it was clearly not to be his tournament this time round. After a disastrous hole at the 6th, where he recorded a nine after struggling to get out of the long grass, his game never quite got back on track, and he eventually finished one under for the tournament and in joint fifth place with Ben Banks (West Surrey) and Van Phillips.
