Lee storms to easy victory at Bovey Castle

June 18th, 2010

CRAIG Lee has stormed to victory in the latest PGA EuroPro Tour event – The Dunlop Masters.

Scotsman Lee, 33, claimed the £10,000 winner’s prize at Bovey Castle in Devon as he finished six shots ahead of England’s Steve Uzzell (Hornsea GC). Lee trailed by three shots after the first round on Wednesday before a score of seven-under on Thursday gave him a share of the lead going into the last day.

But he sprinted towards glory on Friday with a breathtaking performance that included birdies on seven of the first 11 holes and an eagle on the par-five 12th. This victory for Lee (Aspire Golf Club) completes a remarkable month that also saw him perform well at the flagship event on the European Tour – the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Lee had qualified for this by finishing top of the Scottish Order of Merit in 2009 and his first round at Wentworth saw him finish in tied 19th, ahead of star players including Lee Westwood, Paul Casey and Padraig Harrington. He eventually dropped down the leaderboard but still made the cut and finished in the top 70 before maintaining his good form at Bovey Castle this week.

Three players – Andrew Johnston (North Middlesex), James Busby (The Shropshire) and Sean Doherty (Bury GC) – all finished in tied third on 11-under.

Nick McCarthy (Moortown) was for the second event running left rueing his worst round of the tournament on the third day and as a result he ended in sixth place.

Australian Daniel Gaunt keeps his position at the top of the EuroPro Tour Order of Merit as he claimed his third top ten finish of the season.

Graham Clark (Doncaster GC) had shared the lead on the opening day but produced his worst round of the week with a round of seven-over that left him well off the pace
