Lucas Claims Maiden Pro Win

April 28th, 2008

DENNY LUCAS claimed his first professional title as he took the PGA EuroPro Tour’s Brown & Mason Classic at Maylands GC on Friday.Lucas established a share of the lead on the first and second days and a final day score of four-under-par was enough to give him a 13-under-par total of 200 and secure the winner’s cheque of £10,000 for the Worksop-attached 27 year-old.Two eagles were the key for Lucas on his final round as he was pushed all the way by Tim Rice – twice a winner on the tour this year – and Darren Charlton, who tied for second place a shot behind.”This is my first win as a pro and it will give me so much confidence for the rest of the season, Lucas said.”The European Tour school is only a few weeks away and it’s obviously very important so I want to do as well as I can and this can only help me.”Rice, of Limerick, came close to securing a hat-trick of event wins as he completed his first nine holes one stroke ahead, but two bogeys on the run in handed the honours to Lucas – even though the Limerick-man now takes top spot in the Order of Merit.Charlton could only pick up two shots on the final day with four bogeys in his first six holes but recovered to pocket £3,750, the same as Rice.Three players tied for fourth: James Holmes, Craig Goodfellow and Michael Welch, with Holmes shooting a seven-under-par final round of 64 to race up the leaderboard.Elsewhere, Daryl Ley shot a nine-iron hole-in-one at the 16th on Day Two which guarantees him entry in to the Tour Championship for a shoot out to win a Peugeot car.
