Paul Maddy takes a four shot lead into the final day of the 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour Championship at Woburn after shooting a superb 65 in his second round.
The Englishman’s only blemish was a bogey at the ninth, his last hole after starting on the tenth tee.
Maddy, who is 10 under par after 36 holes of the par 72 Marquess’ Course, is in a great position to secure his 2013 Challenge Tour card. He currently sits third on the Order of Merit with the top five earning Challenge Tour categories for next season.
James Watts lies second with one round to play after a five-under-par second-round 67. He came into the day one shot below par and six birdies matched with just one bogey saw him climb the leaderboard.
Duncan Stewart, the only man to win two 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour events this season, is third on five under par after signing for a second-round 68.
“I didn’t expect 65 when I stood on the tee,†said clubhouse leader Maddy after his second round. “I hit my first tee shot down the middle and from there everything fell into place.
“I have to concentrate tomorrow. If I play my own game, go steady and don’t take any risks then there is no reason why I cannot finish high up the leaderboard and finish the season in the top five on the Order of Merit.
“The course is in an exceptional condition for November, the greens are superb.â€
Lee Clarke is fourth on four under par after 36 holes and Alex Belt, Will Roebuck and Nick McCarthy are tied fifth on two under, eight shots behind the leader.
With a prize fund of £60,000 and £15,000 going to the winner, 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour Championship will have a decisive impact on the final Order of Merit. The final top five will earn a category 10 on next season’s Challenge Tour.
The final round takes place on Thursday and spectator entry is free. The first group tee off at 8:30am with the leaders due off at 10am. Live scoring is available at www.europrotour.com.
