McCarthy holds one shot lead going into final day

June 10th, 2010

NICK McCarthy has a one shot lead going into the final day of the latest PGA EuroPro Tour event.

McCarthy (Moortown) is on one-under after two of the three days of the Dawson and Sanderson Classic at Longhirst Hall in Northumberland.

He is the only man to have a score under par as players have battled against a tough course in the fourth event of the EuroPro Tour season. At the start of day two, McCarthy was one of three men on one-under and he made a bright start by claiming a birdie at the first.

However, he struggled for consistency throughout the rest of his round as he made a further four birdies but also five bogeys. Australian Daniel Gaunt, who currently heads the Order of Merit, is on level par, along with England’s Matt Allen as both men scored -2 on Thursday.

Chris Roake (Buckinghamshire Golf Club) and Scott Herald (Mearns Castle Golf) had started the day in tied first position.

They both dropped down the leaderboard but will still be confident of claiming the £10,000 first prize as Roake is fourth on +1, while Herald is tied eighth on +3.

Other contenders include Neil O’Briain (Ireland), George Cowan (Westerhope) and Daniel Rice ( GC), who are all on two over.

Tim Rice (Limerick) and James Harper (Seaton Carew GC) are both on three over, four shots off the lead.

The top 50 players made the cut, which came at ten over par, and they will compete in the final round on Friday.

Among those who did not make the cut were Castle Dargan runner-up Justin Evans and Scotland’s Zack Saltman.
