Damian Mooney shot a new course record 63 at Faithlegg in Waterford to lead the Faithlegg Irish Masters at eight under.
The Northern Irishman was one over going into the final round but his fantastic effort of four back to back birdies from the fourth hole got him going in style. He repeated the feat down the back nine with four straight birdies from 13, and he picked up another at the last to beat Robert McGuirk’s course record of eight under at Faithlegg, set at this tournament last year.
Mooney (Nevada Bobs Belfast) shot 77 in his first round but a 68 yesterday had him near parity and the nine under course record has put him at the top – but he said it could’ve been even sweeter.
“I actually missed a couple of putts – I lipped out on eight and again on 17 so it could’ve been even better but I’m delighted with how it went.
“I’ve been playing well recently but I got off to a bad start in the first round but I improved yesterday and obviously today has been great so we’ll see if it’s good enough score at the end of play.”
Elliot Saltman has just gone level with Mooney through 14 so we could be heading for an exciting conclusion here in Ireland – you can keep up to date by clicking on the live scoring tab on the righthand side of the page.
