Four current PGA EuroPro Tour players were among the dozen golfers to make it through Local Final Qualifying for The Open Championship at Turnberry next week.
Elliot Saltman (Aegon), Steve Surry (Cumberwell Park, pictured), Tom Haylock (Bright Green Golf Management) and Daniel Gaunt (Burhill GC) will take part in the third major of the year beginning on July 16.
It is extra special for Saltman as his older brother Lloyd made it through too, making them the first brothers to play in the event since Seve Ballesteros and his brother Manuel 26 years ago. “It’s a dream come true to be in The Open, especially along with my brother Lloyd,” said Saltman, who carded rounds of 70 and 69 to finish three under at Glasgow – Gailes Links. “Mum’s over the moon. She was on the phone to him while he was here watching me on the 18th.”
Gaunt qualified alongside the elder Saltman at Barassie in Kilmarnock, matching his ten under with round 69 and 67. Surry finished second at Western Gailes on four under (72, 66) with Haylock (73, 67) finishing tied third at two under with Daniel Wardrop, a winner on the Tour in 2007 at De Vere Oulton Hall.
“It’s fantastic to see the guys get through to The Open,” said Danny Nickless, operations manager for the PGA EuroPro Tour. “We wish the guys all the best in Scotland next week and will be following their progress alongside the world’s best with great interest.”
