Second Success Of The Season For Slattery

Second Success Of The Season For Slattery

May 23rd, 2008

LEE SLATTERY confirmed his status as one of the most promising golfers on the PGA EuroPro Tour as he recorded his second tournament victory in a month by claiming The 888.com Masters at Stoke-by-Nayland, near Colchester.

Slattery defeated Darren Charlton at the fourth play-off hole to secure the £10,000 winner’s cheque and catapult himself to the top of the Order of Merit after he also won the PokerMillion.com European Masters at Marriott Goodwood in mid-June.

Slattery, who turns 26 in August, shot four birdies and two bogeys in his final round of 70 (two-under-par), whilst Charlton, from Tilsworth, carded the same score after a birdie at the 18th to force an extra hole.

The final hole was then replayed three times before a thunderstorm hit the course and postponed what turned out to be the deciding hole.

Once the conditions had calmed, play resumed with both players finding the sand with their tee shots.

But Slattery recovered to within six inches of the hole for a straightforward putt and Charlton found himself 20 feet short – a task that proved too tricky to keep the contest alive.

“To win twice in a month is fantastic, I’m over the moon, the Southport-based golfer said. “I’m pleased for my sponsors at the Formby Hall Golf and Country Club because they’ve had faith in me and are now being rewarded.”

An hours play had been lost to the weather over the afternoon, but when matters resumed it was Stephen Pullan who took the initiative with a three-under-par round of 68, although his hopes of sharing the play-off were dashed with a final hole bogey.

Denny Lucas fired his third consecutive consistent round to record his best finish of the season as a level par 72 ensured he held on to fourth place.

The tournament’s other winner was Chris Sands who won a two-day stay at the Stoke-by-Nayland Hotel and Spa courtesy of the venue for his round of 66 – the best of the event.
