Six former Tour players shine in latest European Tour event

May 23rd, 2011

Six former members of the PGA EuroPro Tour have finished inside the top 15 of the latest event on the European Tour.

The Madeira Islands Open in Portugal was won by Northern Ireland’s Michael Hoey, while Jamie Elson finished in tied second with Lloyd Saltman in tied fourth.

Colm Moriarty came level seventh and Tom Whitehouse and Lee Slattery were among a number of golfers in tied tenth.

This success is Hoey’s second victory on the European Tour after he also won the Estoril Open de Portugal back in 2009.

After a glittering amateur career that saw him win the British Amateur Championship and compete in the Walker Cup in 2001, Hoey turned professional in 2002 and competed on the EuroPro Tour in 2003.

He played in five tournaments with his best performance being a tied third place at Wychwood Park before he regularly started playing on the Challenge Tour, where he won three events.

Elson, who started the final day in Portugal level with Hoey, last played on the EuroPro Tour in 2009, while Saltman came tied second at Five Lakes, Essex in September 2010.

Moriarty won at Wensum Valley in 2007 on his way to finishing fourth in the 2007 EuroPro Tour Order of Merit.

Slattery and Whitehouse have also excelled in previous years’ Order of Merit coming third in 2004 and first in 2003 respectively.

Danny Nickless, Operations Manager for the PGA EuroPro Tour, believes this again highlights the role the tour is playing in developing golf stars of the future.

He said: “Now the Tour is a few years old we are starting to see how important it is and that it produces players of real quality and results like the one we saw at the weekend.

“These performances, from a number of ex PGA EuroPro Tour players, strengthen the tour and give current players the belief and heart they will need to compete at the highest level.”
