Steve Surry won the opening event of the 2009 PGA EuroPro Tour season at Collingtree Park in Northampton and official bookmakers Sky Bet offer 20/1 for him to win three or more tournaments on the 2009 Tour.
Surry (pictured) capitalised on Chris Hanson surrendering a five shot overnight lead ahead of the final round to win The Michael Ward UK Open by one shot at one under par and bank the first £10,000 cheque of the 2009 Tour. Surry is the joint 14/1 favourite to win the Green17 Faithlegg Championship in Ireland which starts on Wednesday along with Elliot Saltman. The Scotsman was one of three players to finish tied for second place one stroke behind Surry and will be keen to go one better at the Waterford course this year, after losing to 2008 Order of Merit winner Irishman Noel Fox in a play-off last May. Paul Dwyer joined Saltman in joint second and is 16/1 to win the Irish event.
“The front three in the betting seem pretty strong this week having all been the top guys in Northampton,” said Sky Bet’s John Rhodes. “We expect a good week golf and betting wise, with the locker room buzzing last week with players and caddies alike discussing their odds.”
Fox was the first of three Irish winners last year and Sky Bet make it 13/2 that an Irishman will the event and they have priced up which of the Irishman will perform best on home soil. Michael McDermott is 13/2 favourite ahead of Cian McNamara at 8/1, Peter O’Keeffe at 9/1 and fourth favourite Paul O’Hanlon at 10/1.
Hanson will not be playing in Ireland but is a 3/1 shot to win an event on the 2009 Tour. Click here to bet on any of the EuroPro Tour markets above.
