The final day of the Pokermillion.com European Masters at Marriott Goodwood Park Golf & Country Club turned out to be the most exciting day’s play so far this season.
Michael Welch (Hawkstone Park) managed to produce an excellent 66 (six under par) to move him up the leaderboard as others struggled with the conditions.
Welch started the round in 19th position on level par, but produced a two under front nine and then had four birdies in a row at the start of the back nine to move into a finishing position of tied third.
Following his round he said: “I started off well and made a birdie at the fourth and followed it with an eagle at the fifth, then I was off and running.”
Overnight leader Jack Doherty (Vale of Glamorgan) birded the second hole to extend his lead further, but was being chased by Lee Slattery (Formby Hall Golf & Country Club) who made two excellent birdies at five and seven.
With the wind picking up slightly in the late afternoon, Slattery started the back nine three shots behind Doherty and then produced what he described as ‘perfect golf’.
In his last six holes he was seven under, which surged him up the field. His finishing tournament score was 11 under par, and leader in the clubhouse.
With Doherty still on the course he required a similar finish to force a play-off, however he saw his birdie putt on 16 lip out and his eagle putt also lip out on 18. He finished on nine under par, two behind Slattery who picked up his first victory of the year.
