The Stoke by Nayland Club Pro Am heralded a great start to three days of top professional golf, as 30 PGA Europro players took to the fairway with 90 amateurs. These included local businessmen, sponsors and several celebrity teams. Unquestionably the stars of the day were the ‘Dream Team’ (pictured left). Three of the 1991 world champion 4x400m relay team Kriss Akabusi, Derek Redmond and John Regis delighted crowds of spectators not so much with their golfing skills but with their sparkling triple act comedy antics.
Six times world snooker champion Steve Davis (pictured below) sunk several white balls with Chairman of both the PGA Europro Tour and Matchroom Sport, Barry Hearn and President of ESPN Star TV Asia, Wayne Becker. Ipswich Town Football Club Chairman David Sheepshanks teamed up with the Chief Executive of the PGA Europro Tour, Peter Little and BBC Radio Suffolk Sports Presenter Brian Knights, while Ipswich Town footballer Martijn Reuser also delighted crowds with his golfing prowess.
The winners of the medal scoring competition, however, with an impressive 125 (top two scores) were Evening Gazette & Essex County Standard sports writer Graham Warwick who played with sponsors Darren Barden of Spartan Safety Products and Furniture Outdoors guest player John Mann. These guests were teamed with PGA Europro Tour Professional Tom Whitehouse, who demonstrated exactly why he is top of the Order of Merit.
Spectators from the region enjoyed a balmy East Anglian summer evening overlooking the 18th green and the Pimms flowed to the strains of the Tom Collins Jazz Band, culminating in a Gala Dinner for teams and sponsors, at which Guest of Honour Derek Redmond presented the prizes.
The Stoke by Nayland Club PGA Europro Championship Tournament takes place from 1st – 3rd July 2003.
