Stewart finds his Sweetspot

Duncan Stewart made a course record 65, eight under par, to take a one-shot clubhouse lead after the first round of the Sweetspot Masters at Hunley Hotel and Golf Club on the North Yorkshire coast.

Stewart continues his good form having won the Sweetspot Classic at Longhirst two weeks ago. He finished tied for sixth seven days earlier at Wychwood Park.

Matt Allen, Daniel Gavins and Rika Batibasaga all trail by one after signing for 66 in their first round.

Play finished shortly after 7:30pm with 27 golfers still to complete their opening rounds after play was suspended for two hours and 17 minutes due to heavy rain in the afternoon.

Those golfers will complete their first 18 holes on Thursday before commencing their second round at the scheduled time. No alterations have been made to the format of the 54-hole PGA EuroPro Tour event.

Stewart (Grantown on Spey) opened with a birdie on the tenth and gained shots at 13 and 16 to complete the back nine three under par.

Coming in he made three consecutive birdies from the first with a three, two and four. A seventh birdie followed with a four at seven and an eagle three at the eighth took him nine strokes below par. His only blemish came at his final hole, the par-three ninth, where he made four.

Allen began his round at the 10th and made early inroads with a birdie four at 12, and eagle at the par-four 13th and a second birdie at the 14th. He delivered four more birdies on the back nine, with a bogey at six his only blemish.

Gavins also slipped up with a five at the par-four sixth. He made eight birdies on his way to 66 on the par-73 Morgans Course at Hunley Hotel and Golf Club.

He opened with a three at the par-four tenth and added birdies at 12, 13, 15 and 16 to turn home five shots below par.

Batibasaga recovered from three bogeys on his back nine to gain four shots on his final three holes having started at 10. Alongside his three bogeys Batibasaga made eight birdies and an eagle three at the seventh.

Daniel Wardrop (Didsbury Golf Club) and Matthew Evans (Rotherham Golf Club) completed their first round six under par and five players are three strokes behind leader Stewart after completing 18 holes. Will Roebuck (Shirley Parsons Associates) is five under par after playing 15 holes and will conclude his opening round on Thursday.
