Streeter's Success!

Streeter's Success!

June 28th, 2008

Paul Streeter (Belton Woods) became the champion of the Commercial Vehicle Direct Insurance Trophy after winning a playoff with his playing partner in the final day, Scotland’s Graham Rankin (Drumpelllier).

Both players put in outstanding performances on the final day to reach a staggering sixteen under par. Streeter had made the early move, putting a five shot gap between himself and the rest of the field when he reached fifteen under. However, Rankin then made five birdies from the fist six holes of the back nine to come back at him, eventually carding an impressive six under par round of 65, which left him tied in first place with Streeter.

When the pair returned to the eighteenth, Streeter played his second shot aggressively to within twenty feet of the pin, whereas Rankin’s ball went through the green to lie several feet behind. Although Rankin chipped well back onto the green, Streeter’s putt stopped just inches away from the hole enabling him to make four and put the pressure back onto his rival. Rankin was left with a ten footer, which went just wide of the hole to hand the title and the £10,000 first prize to Streeter.

Paul said, “I really enjoyed it! After shooting 61 yesterday I wondered if perhaps I wouldn’t have anything left, but after a few holes knew the putter was still warm!”.

Streeter also paid credit to the staff at Marriott Worsley Park for presenting the course in such fine condition. He said, “This is a very tough course – I’ve played on the European Tour and this course is every bit as good. The low scoring is due to the fact that the greens here are so pure and so you can hole anything. Well, I can anyway!” he joked.

Rankin picked up £5,000 for his second place finish, which pushed him to the top of the Order of Merit with total earnings of over £20,800 for the season so far.

Rock solid South African star Michiel Bothma (Woodhill – Pretoria) finished in third place, two shots behind with a fourteen under par total of 199. Bothma achieved eagles on the fifth and the thirteenth, as well as five birdies and two bogeys for a final round 66.

Fourth place went to John Cockroft (Nelson) who carded a five under par final round score of 66 for a thirteen under par aggregate. Fifth place was shared by Phil Worthington, Simon Lilly (Wellingborough) and Tom Whitehouse (Maxstoke Park).

The best round of the day was from Kieran Staunton (Woodcote Park), who is still in his rookie year as a professional. Staunton carded an amazing eight birdies and just one bogey to finish with a 64, which lifted him up into joint eighth position.
