Stunning Win For Marshall

Stunning Win For Marshall

March 13th, 2008

ANDREW MARSHALL won The Classic at Wensum Valley in the most dramatic fashion possible, with an eagle at the final hole giving him victory ahead of Daniel Gaunt.

Marshall, who shared the lead with Gaunt at -6 going into the final round, had chipped in from off the green on the final hole on Thursday, and repeated the feat 24 hours later to snatch the title.

In a tense final day, Marshall trailed Gaunt by four strokes with eight holes to play after the Wildwood Park golfer moved out to -11.

There was a two-stroke swing on the twelfth as Marshall hit a birdie and Gaunt bogeyed, and another bogey on the 15th left him just two shots clear with three to play.

A further bogey on the 16th, when Gaunt three-putted, left Marshall just a shot behind, and both players held par on the penultimate hole.

Gaunt hit his second stroke past the green on the 18th and, with Marshall having landing short, his chip to five feet looked set to earn him the spoils.

But, amazingly following his feat of the second round, Marshall again chipped in for an eagle – leaving Gaunt with a putt to force a play-off.

He agonisingly saw the putt lip out to see Marshall, the European Tour member and a sponsors’ invitation to the event, take the £12,000 winner’s cheque.

“It’s an amazing win,” admitted Marriott Sprowston Manor golfer Marshall afterwards.

“It was a great way to finish, and I really enjoyed the event.

“Five or six years ago I played on the PGA EuroPro Tour, and if it wasn’t for the work of the PGA and Matchroom Sport, young players wouldn’t have the platform to progress their careers to the European Tour.”

A course record of 64 from Zane Scotland saw him jump up to third place at -4, with first round leader Ross Fisher and Dean Plant a further shot behind.

At the close of the successful opening event of the PGA EuroPro Tour, Wensum Valley’s Basil Todd confirmed that he had signed a deal to take the opening event of the 2006 season back to the Norfolk Course.
