July 8th, 2008

The second day of play at Quinta da Marinha Oitavos Golfe saw markedly different conditions to the fierce wind of the first afternoon, with the day remaining calm but temperatures reaching a scorching forty degrees centigrade.

Max Harris (Canford Magna) played a fantastic round to card a course record equalling score of 66. This included an incredible seven birdies – particularly commendable given the difficulty of the course – and just two bogeys to leave him with a five under par score for the round and two under for the tournament.

The record was set by Peter Whiteford (Wellsgreen) in this event last year, and Whiteford is clearly in form yet again this year. He recorded solid rounds of 67 and 70 to put him in the joint lead going into the final round. With him is Michael Welch (Hawkstone Park) who recorded a second round score of 68 – the second best of the day – to also leave him with a five under par score total of 137.

In third place after the second round lies Gareth Davies (Abbeydale) who scored a second consecutive 69 to finish with a four under par total of 138. Davies finished in fourth place in this event last year and looks set to do even better this time round.

Steve Standing, whose incredible first round 69 in the fierce afternoon wind set him apart, shot 70 in the second round to leave him in fourth place with a three under par total of 139 going into the final round.

Local amateur Tiago Cruz played outstandingly to eagle the sixteenth which when combined with his three birdies and three bogeys left him with an impressive second round score of 69. This brought his total for the tournament to 149, meaning he unfortunately missed the cut by just one shot.

Scores of 148 (+6) and better were good enough to make the cut, and 53 players will complete a third and final round.
