The final event of the four consecutive tournaments taking place in Portugal teed off on Wednesday 18th June at the stunning Quinta da Marinha Oitavos Golfe course near Lisbon.
The immaculate but challenging par 71 course, made even tougher by fierce winds which steadily increased over the afternoon, was the first golf course in Europe and only the second in the world to be recognised as a Golf Certified Signature Sanctuary by the American Association Audubon International.
Despite the difficulty of the course, many players rose to the challenge, with impressive four under par scores of 67 being recorded by Peter Whiteford (Wellsgreen), Ian Keenan (Royal Liverpool) and the winner of the Palmares event, Antonio Sobrinho (Vale do Lobo).
Just a shot behind were Aran Wainwright (Wakefield GC) and South African Thomas Aiken who both shot 68.
Despite facing the worst of the draw by setting out just after two o’clock and so having to contend with the powerful afternoon wind, Steve Standing (Nazeing GC) played a sensational round of 69 – a remarkable achievement given the conditions. This puts Standing in joint sixth position after the first round alongside Gareth Davies (Abbeydale), Michael Welch (Hawkstone Park) and the winner of the Quinta da Marinha Oitavos Golfe Pro Am, Craig Lee.
All players will complete one more round before the cut is made to the top 50 players and ties who will then play a third and final round. This week, players are competing for the biggest prize-fund of the season so far – a massive €92,000!
