Trio lead the way at The Shire

Trio lead the way at The Shire

Adam Frayne, James Harris and Dale Marmion top the leaderboard at four under after the second round of a hugely competitive PGA EuroPro Tour event at The Shire.

Marmion (Eaton) picked up four birdies starting his round on the back nine, but double bogeyed the first hole on the way back to spoil his early work, coming in at one under. Frayne (St Mellion) and Harris (Tonbridge GC) went round level to stay at four under after two rounds.

Overnight leader Philip Beever had a poor start to his round after carding a new course record in the first round. He wiped two shots of his fantastic seven under par effort on Wednesday with a double bogey on the tenth – his first hole for the round on the two-tee start – and three consecutive bogeys down his back nine led to four over for the round and dropped him to three under.

Barry Hume shot four under to get right into the mix at three under for the tournament. The Renfrew man made early inroads into his first round of one over with three birdies on the front nine, adding another one at 15 to complete a blemish-free round.

“I played much the same as I did yesterday really; I made some nice par putts and took advantage of my good shots,” said the 26 year-old Scot.

The fantastic weather at The Shire continued into the second day, but ball-control was tough with swirling winds the bane of the players all day.

“The wind is a lot stronger today that’s making the greens bouncier, but I played well and if I play the same way tomorrow I’ll be there or thereabouts,” said Hume.

Brian McElhinney (Team Ireland) and Sean Doherty (Bury) are also three under, with Aran Wainwright (DP Publicity), Daniel Brooks (Mill Hill), Robert McGuirk (Princes), Lloyd Kennedy (Chelmsford GC) Elliot Saltman (Aegon) and Colin Roope ( at two under. Roope’s round was especially impressive after taking eight on the par three first – six birdies thereafter rescuing his card at one over for the second round.

The cut for the final round is five over – with play beginning at 8am. You can follow the action with live scoring at .
