The PGA Europro Tour tournament at Vilamoura Millennium Golf Course teed off today, for the second event of the Quinta da Ria/Casinos do Algarve Swing leg of the Tour.
David Salisbury (Ballards Gore) got off to a flying start, carding an incredible seven bogeys in his first nine holes for a score of 29 at the turn. Although slightly shaky on the return, David still managed to record a great opening score of 65 – six under par – to put him in joint first place with South African Michiel Bothma. Michiel continued his good run of form from recent tournaments with an impressive round including an eagle on the eleventh, six birdies and just two bogeys to also finish six under par for the first round.
Scotsman Marc Warren also played a good opener, with just two bogeys amongst his five birdies and eagle to finish in second place after eighteen holes with a five under par score of 66.
The wind increased dramatically during the afternoon, with the players in the second half of the draw recording higher scores as a result. Despite this, Guy Woodman (Stoke Park) and winner of the 2002 PGA Europro Tour event at Dale Hill, Kyron Sullivan (Vale of Glamorgan) both played solidly to record four under par scores of 67 and finish in joint fourth place alongside Welshman Yestyn Taylor (Dale Kennedy Partnership).
