Welch And Lucas Lead The Way

Welch And Lucas Lead The Way

April 30th, 2008

THE PGA EuroPro Tour was greeted with the rare sight of blazing sunshine in a clear sky as The Brown and Mason Classic teed off at Maylands Golf Club in Essex.Ben Welch (Grayhawk Sports Management) was able to take full advantage as a round including six birdies, an eagle and two bogeys led him to a day’s score of 65 (six-under-par) to share the lead.Welch gained five shots on the first four holes after starting at the tenth, but Denny Lucas (Worksop) matched him overall with seven birdies and a bogey for the same score.Five of the six shots Lucas gained were on his back nine, but steady play throughout ensured he would be level first at the close of play.A single shot behind are Dutchman Inder van Weerelt and David Salisbury.Van Weerelt managed five birdies without a bogey but he may live to regret three missed birdie putts, despite picking up a shot on each of his last three holes.

Salisbury (Ballards Gore) overcame a groin strain to hit six birdies and a bogey for his 66 (five-under-par) whilst Darren Charlton (Tilsworth) birdied the last two holes to finish on 67 (four-under-par) with a whole host of players on 68.
