Peter Whiteford (Wellsgreen) won the Quinta da Marinha Oitavos Golfe Open by two clear shots after recording a seven under par total of 206.
Whiteford, who is the current course record holder after shooting an incredible round of 66 in this event last year, had begun the final round as joint leader with Michael Welch (Hawkstone Park), but a strong final round performance including an impressive five birdies and three bogeys for a 69 handed the Scot the title and the £12,000 first prize.
Whiteford adds this victory to his one at Morley Hayes last year, and his win lifts him into second place on the Order of Merit with total earnings of over £17,000 for the season so far. He said, “I had a pretty poor start to the season but I played well this week so I’m really pleased”. He added, “It’s a great course in fantastic condition and I would be proud to come back again next year to defend the title!”.
For the second week running, Welch finished in second place. He shot rounds of 69, 68 and 71 to finish with a five under par total of 208, and commented, “It was very tough out there and a real battle all day. But Peter played the better golf, pulled off some quality shots and really deserved to win”.
Max Harris (Canford Magna), who equalled Whiteford’s course record 66 in the second round, again played well to record a final round 69 and take third place.
In joint fourth place were Steve Standing (Nazeing), Gareth Davies (Abbeydale) and the winner of the Quinta da Ria event John Mellor (Lindrick). All recorded three under par totals of 210.
