JOHN WADE has won The Kronenbourg Classic, coming from behind on the final day to defeat fellow Australian Daniel Gaunt by four shots.
Wade, 37, began the final day three shots behind Gaunt, but applied immediate pressure by opening his third round with two birdies.
Although Gaunt recovered to keep his three-stroke cushion at the turn, a four-shot swing on the 11th and 12th holes – as he hit a bogey and triple bogey – suddenly put Wade in front.
He managed to capitalise on that to close out the victory, repeating his win at Ufford Park of last year to claim the £10,000 winner’s cheque.
“I’m very pleased,” said Wade, who finished third at the Challenge Tour event in Wales last weekend.
“I was playing with another Aussie today and I felt bad for him – one bad hole turned it on its head and I managed to close it out.
“I started well and found myself back in there, but didn’t handle myself too well and he got back ahead.
“It was a tough day, but I’m happy with the win.”
He added: “It takes a bit of pressure off me too. I had a late call for the Challenge Tour last week and had a good weekend on a tough course.
“But things often come in twos and I thought I could put myself in with a chance here in Scotland too.
“I wasn’t too sure whether to come back (from Australia) but I hope to play as well as possible on the PGA EuroPro Tour and in the Open Qualifiers.”
Wildwood Park golfer Gaunt finished second for the second successive PGA EuroPro Tour event, having lost out to Andrew Marshall at Wensum Valley a fortnight ago.
Team Ireland’s Michael McDermott shot a 69 on the final day to snatch third place, one shot ahead of Scot Graham Fox.
Dutchman Hiddo Uhlenbeck continued the International success, being tied for fifth with Mark Smith and Jason Levermore.
Having had problems with the weather in previous years, the Whitekirk course enjoyed superb conditions this week until shortly after the presentations, when the traditional Seahaar rolled in off the North Sea!
