Whitnell, Saltman and Keenan qualify for Open

July 3rd, 2012

Three PGA EuroPro Tour members came through Local Final Qualifying on Tuesday to claim a place in the field at the 2012 Open Championship.

Dale Whitnell finished top of the pile at Hillside Golf Club, while at Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club Ian Keenan and Elliot Saltman were both successful in a three-way play-off for two places at The Open.

Whitnell, attached to Five Lakes Golf Club, carded nine under par (68, 67, 135) to finish top of the leaderboard after two rounds and claim his place at The Open by one shot.

Keenan, based at 2014 Open Championship host venue Royal Liverpool, shot a first-round of 70 and a four-under par 68 in the afternoon. Saltman (Archerfield Links) got to six under par with a morning round of 68 and 70 in the afternoon. Scotsman Chris Doak joined them in the play-off but missed out after his tee shot found some tough lie.

A total of 12 Open Championship places were up for grabs. The top three from a field of 72 at each of the four Local Final Qualifying venues earned the right to play at Royal Lytham & St Annes in two weeks.
