George Woolgar holds a one-shot lead after the opening round of the Buildbase Open at Frilford Heath Golf Club in Oxfordshire.
Woolgar (Capitalservices) signed for a six-under-par 66 in his first round with the help of a chip in to eagle the 13th. Martin Sell (Wrag Bran Golf Club) finished with a 67 and four players are three shots off the lead on three under par.
A bogey at the first wasn’t the ideal start for Woolgar in this 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour event but he quickly made amends with a four at two to level his round. A second birdie followed at the third and he concluded his front nine with a birdie two.
A birdie at 14 followed his eagle but he dropped a shot at the 15th before birdies at 16 and 18 took him six strokes below the card.
Sell had a less-mixed round, with five birdies seeing him to 67. He started on the tenth tee and broke par at 11 and 16. Coming home he made birdies with a three at the fifth, a four at six and a two at the par-three ninth.
Billy Fowles (Wentworth), Daniel Wardrop (Didsbury Golf Club), Paul Reed (Bristol & Clifton Golf Club) and David Rawluk (The Island) share third place on the leaderboard.
Fowles, who won at Bur Hill in June, started with a birdie at the 10th and also broke par at 15 and six to sign for a three-under-par 69. Wardrop also made a 69 in the morning, after a mixed round starting at 10.
He opened with a birdie but double bogeys at 11 and 13 saw him fall to three over par. He immediately brought his score down with a three at the par-four 14th and back-to-back birdies at 17 and 18. Four birdies and a bogey followed on his back nine to take him to 69.
Reed was victorious at Galgorm Castle earlier in the season and is well-placed to improve on his Order of Merit standing this week. He shot a first-round 69 with six birdies. However he dropped shots with a double bogey six at the third and a bogey at 15.
Rawluk opened with a birdie three at the first and added another at the third before bogeying the fourth. Further birdies came at six and 10 before another dropped shot at the 11th. He pulled that back with a birdie three at 13 before making bogey, birdie at 15 and 16.
Five players are tied for fourth on -2. The second round commences on Frilford Heath’s red course at 7:30am on Thursday morning (July 19).
